Their findings indicated that kinship support was positively correlated with youth adjustment for teens from both single-parent and two-parent homes and with college-educated and less-educated parents.

For both males and females, having paternal role models was associated with positive school outcomes. The presence of female role models was also linked to psychological well-being such that adolescents with maternal role models reported the least distress. This study suggests that both maternal and paternal role models are important for academic success and psychosocial well-being. Ethnic Differences in Family Structure and Well-Being Research suggests that the impact of household structure may differ for African American youth than for youth from other racial and ethnic groups.

Among African American children, time spent in a single-headed family or married-couple family was not significantly different in terms of academic achievement or delinquency.
