Their heads were delicate, with thin skull bonesthey were not massive like the larger theropods. They had long snouts, beak-like jaws covered with horny material, and big eyes. Most were toothless, and all had long necks. Their forelimbs and hands were weak and probably of little use in acquiring foodso most likely, these dinosaurs ate not only meat, but also insects, eggs, and plants. Most famous ornithomimosaurs were Struthiomimus and its slightly larger relative Ornithomimus. Largest of all known ornithomimosaurs was Gallimimus.

It was made up of small pieces of bone called osteoderms, which were shaped like cones or plates. Ernausaurus was small, so it needed the armor to protect itself from larger meat-eaters that attacked. Scutellosaurus was bigger than Emausaurus, and its armor was more elaborate. On the outside, Scutellosaurus resembled its larger relative Scelidosaurus. Both dinosaurs boasted rows of small bony plates and scutes along the neck, back, and tail. But Scelidosaurus was more heavily armored than Scutellosaurus although the latter had another advantage.

Why was there such a large concentration of bones there? Perhaps because the animals were trapped during some kind of catastrophean earthquake or volcanic eruption. But the bones seem to have been scattered before burial, and there are also signs of scavenging, adding to the mystery of this fossil site. Scientists have yet to determine the truthyour guess is as Page 29 Page 30 good as theirs. Dino Facts NAME: Acrocanthosaurus (''high spined lizard") GROUP: Carnosauria WHEN IT LIVED: Early Cretaceous WHERE IT LIVED: Oklahoma, Texas SIZE: 40 feet long, 4 tons Another carnosaur was Acrocanthosaurus.
